Resilience alludes to my Chinese name, 陈源, which literally means “fountainhead.” While the work’s fractured ceramic base may not be able to hold water on its own, by operating in tandem with the glass tank the fountain can utilize its fragmented physicality to continue the flow of fresh water. I created Resilience as a testament not only to my desire to stay connected to my Chinese heritage as a biracial white-Asian but also to my embrace of my racial ambiguity and the cultural messiness sometimes associated with it.
